Mahangi Devi Gangai resident of Gaurijung Rural Municipality, faced immense challenges due to gender-based violence following her arranged marriage. Three years in, her parents passed away, and her husband abandoned her, leaving her to care for their young daughter alone. Seeking help from village elders only led to more abuse.

Determined to fight for her rights, Mahangi filed a court case a decade ago, but the financial burden of legal fees and travel to the Morang District Court weighed heavily on her. Despite these challenges, she remained resolute.

n 2020, the Social Network for Justice and Development (SNJD) formed the Shiv Shakti Women’s Agriculture Group to empower marginalized women. Mahangi joined to gain new skills and started a homemade puffed rice business. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to deplete her savings.

With support from LWF and SNJD, Mahangi received NPR 15,000 to restart her business. Her resilience paid off as she revived her traditional puffed rice business, now earning NPR 500 to NPR 600 in the local market and an additional NPR 5,000 each month from home. This income supports her daughter’s education and family living expenses.

Mahangi dreams of building her own house and giving her daughter a bright future. Grateful for the support during this critical phase, she inspires others to persevere in the face of adversity, striving for dignity and justice.
