Shree Shiv Basic School, which was founded in B.S. 2034, is one of the oldest schools in Jhapa District of Kachankawal Rural Municipality. The majority of the students are from marginalized communities such as Santhal, Ganesh, and Muslim. The school children are compelled to bring drinking water from home despite having water facility in the school because school had only tube wells and lacked filtered drinking water.
Social Network for Justice and Development (SNJD)-implementing partner of LWF Nepal-with the financial support from DFAT addressed the issue by installing drinking water stations with 1000 liter water tanks around the school. The water tanks are connected with the local drinking water source. Students are relieved that they no longer have to carry extra water to school.
Prakriti Murmu studying in class five said, “I didn’t use to drink water in the school because the water had iron. It used to be very difficult not to drink water during hot days but now I can freely drink as much water as I can.”
Falguni Rajbanshi-Principal of the School stated that due to a lack of financial sources the school was unable to provide safe drinking water to the students. After the support, not only students but teachers too have access to safe drinking water. Principal Rajbanshi said, “The establishment of water stations has supported in sanitation as well because students were lazy to get water from tube well to wash their hands but now having easy access to tap, they regularly wash hand and maintain hygiene.” she expressed his gratitude towards LWF Nepal and SNJD for providing safe drinking water to the school children.
